In addition to our physical body we are also our mind, breath, emotions, deeper intellect and pure bliss. Making changes even in one of these dimensions can profoundly affect others. The five layers or Koshas of the human system are:
Physical Body: The needs of nourishment for our physical body changes from infancy through old age. To promote and maintain balanced growth we need to optimize the food we eat along with a regular fitness regime that is appropriate for our unique body and lifestyle needs.
Vital Body: The characteristics of balanced vital metabolic functions of our body can be observed by our sleep patterns and quality, our energy level, the nature of our digestion and bowel movements, the regularity and associated symptoms of our menstrual cycles, fertility, etc;
Intellectual Mind: This next layer emphasizes the importance of educating and developing the mind to improve learning, memory, and creativity. A harmonious environment, interesting professional challenges, and fun and supportive relationships offer an ideal diet for the mind.
Wisdom: Our personality is strongly influenced by many factors, including our past and environment, which conditions our perceptions, goals, values and the content and style of our communication. By discerning the information we receive, we can decide what is right for us – not just because someone told us so, but because we truly believe it for ourselves.
Our True Self: This is where our true authentic self exists. To be authentic is to feel at home in our body and to feel true to our sense of values. It is a kind of confidence that doesn’t come from attaining something outside of ourselves, but knowing deeply we are enough whatever our feelings, needs, or skills are. We can be true to our own personality, spirit, or character despite external pressures.
